Mitt Romney proud of Bob Jones endorsement

Bob Jones University in South Carolina once threatened to arrest its gay alumni, up until the year 2000 banned inter-racial dating on campus, and has previously called Catholicism a cult and the Pope the anti-Christ.   Rumor also has it that the university refuses (or at least refused) to honor Martin Luther King Jr., and that a former Chancellor once called King an “apostate.”

All that said, one has to wonder why Mitt Romney’s campaign was so proud last week to receive the endorsement of Bob Jones III. To quote Romney spokesman William Holley: “We’re proud to have Dr. Jones’ support and look forward to working with him to communicate Governor Romney’s message of conservative change to voters.”

Proud of an endorsement from a school with a track record of racism, sexism, heterosexism  , and vehement hatred of other religions, including Catholicism, Islam, and Romney’s own Mormon faith? (Yes, that’s what might be most odd about this — Bob Jones III is quoted as saying “As a Christian, I am completely opposed to the doctrines of mormonism.” But Bob Jones’ fear of Rudy Giuliani is propelling him to make this endorsement.  )

This may be the biggest sign yet of how much Mitt Romney is willing to sell himself out to become President. Romney’s willing to kiss the fundamentali st ring of a University Chancellor who believes that the former Governor belongs to a cult, that the races were created separately by God for a reason, and that gay people should be arrested just for stepping foot on campus. Yes, for all of that Romney is “proud.”

At this rate, maybe Romney can angle for an endorsement from crazy pastor Rev. Fred Phelps, the uber-right bigot who protests the funerals of fallen soldiers because America tolerates the gays too much. I mean, come on, is it that much of a step from Bob Jones III to Rev. Fred Phelps? It hardly seems so.

  1. Yeah… and you guys have Hillary!

  2. I do keep hoping that the republican party self destructs over things like this.

  3. […] Bring It On! Religion and Society wrote an interesting post today on Mitt Romney proud of Bob Jones endorsementH ere’s a quick excerpt Bob Jones University in South Carolina once threatened to arrest its gay alumni, up until the year 2000 banned inter-racial dating on campus, and has previously called Catholicism … as saying “As a Christian, I am completely opposed to the doctrines of mormonism.†ť But Bob Jones’ fear […]

  4. “Yeah… and you guys have Hillary! ”

That’s right and Hillary doesn’t kiss rings ,just butts like that of Sinn Fein , Yasser Arafat, and George Soros.

  5. So you two think that the things bob jones represents are great and Mitt is justly proud.

  6. Why do you care so much Chris? You have Hillary.

  7. I guess i actually care about the consitution and people. I have the rather quaint notion that hurting people just because they are different is wrong.

  8. Fuck Chris, Romney ain’t the guy you should be worried about. None of you liberal bloggers get it.

“Oh Mitt looks like Clark Griwald and he voted for gay marriage before he was against it and now… now… ooohh… he has the support of Bob Jones”

I actually have to look up things you guys come up with as evil. Seriously… get over yourselves…

(Hillary takes money from illegal campaign donors)

  9. And not to mention Hillary got 500-2,000 ea from dishwashers and street vendors from Chinatown in NYC. Yeah I bet.
Amazing I never see any posts about how great your front runner is.

  10. 250,000 people were evacuated by a fire in Southern California today and you guys are worried about Romney’s association with Bob Jones instead of blaming the fire on Bush, the white Governor of California or the fact Bush didn’t sign onto the Kyoto Treaty to stop global warming…

  11. How does any of that detract from what was said? Do you or do you not agree with bob jones?

  12. So if you flip flop as a republican it is alright but if your a democrat it is a major flaw in character. Strange double standard you have.

  13. Chris:

Let me put it to you simple:

I DO NOT SUPPORT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!   HE WON’T WIN, HE CAN’T WIN…. END OF STORY..

Now let’s talk about our other viable candidates: Thompson or Guiliani. Do they get the full support of Bob Jones? No… Therefore Bob Jones is a non-issue…

Let’s talk about campaign finance… Should we start with Clinton or Obama?

  14. Steve,

Mitt Romney has NEVER endorsed homosexual marriage or domestic partnerships . You have to realize that when he debated Teddie Kennedy, neither of those concepts were on the horizon. He simply said he would protect homosexuals  (from bigotry) better than Teddie (who only has political motivations for doing so).

MItt believes homosexuals are our Father in Heavens children, just like us, they have challenges, and we’ll be judged on how we treat them. His tolerance has never extended to same-sex marriage or domestic partnerships .

  15. Bot,

Mitt’s a phony. He takes on whatever position can get him elected. He learned from his father, who’s presidential campaign derailed when he confessed that he’d been wrong about Vietnam. Romney is like Bush. When Bush’s father voted for tax increases - absolutely necessary tax increases - his own party turned on him the way they did Nixon when he imposed price controls, and stood up for the EPA and Head Start. Bush learned to never raise taxes, even if you should, and to never change a position unless it was to one held by the Religious Right.

“Father in Heavens children,” my ass. Mitt doesn’t “believe” in anything but his own political career. He would do nothing of benefit for America. Say what you will about Hillary, but at least she wants a better nation.

    JMJ

  16. Say what you will about Hillary, but at least she wants a better nation.

Jersey there’s a differnece between wanting and knowing.

  17. “As a result of our discussions and other interactions with gay and lesbian voters across the state, I am more convinced than ever that as we seek to establish full equality for America’s gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent,” Romney wrote, referring to US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

“If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will,” Romney wrote.

And yes even during this time he was against gay marriage. I just do not see how you can be for full equality and against gay marriage at the same time.

here is an ad from his Massachusett s campaign

Narrator: For years he’s fought conservative s and religious extremists†¦Mitt Romney.

Romney: “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country…I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it.”— Massachusett s Senate Debate, October 25, 1994, Boston, Faneuil Hall.

Narrator: Mitt Romney opposed the gun lobby…

    Even Ronald Reagan…

Romney: I was independent during the time of Reagan-Bush.   I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush. —Massachus etts Senate Debate, October 25, 1994, Boston, Faneuil Hall.

    Narrator: …a record fighting the religious right …a pro-choice record… Massachusett s values…Mit t Romney.

Sounds like serious flip flopping to me.
